Post-Op Day #3

Here's a recap of what happened yesterday...

*Peyton was moved out of CICU and on to the floor!
*Oxygen turned down to 1/2 liter at 4:00PM yesterday - still sating in the mid to upper 80's.
*No chest tubes pulled - hopefully will pull all three of them today.
*Peyton was given ibuprofen and morphine and therefore he slept for about 3 hours. He woke up really happy after that.
*He went without pain meds for awhile and then was suddenly in a lot of pain. We will make sure we are giving those faithfully!
*Peyton finished his antibiotics yesterday at 6:00PM. No more for him unless he develops an infection.
*Peyton went fishing in his bed with his new fishing pole from Grandma Randee.

Check out that smile!!!

*Peyton won a Bingo prize - He picked a Disney Cars book. (We didn't actually play Bingo because the TV wasn't working right but he still got a prize.)

*Mommy checked out of the Ronald McDonald House and checked into Peyton's room at the hotel on the hill. The RMH even gave Peyton a blanket and pillow. He was way excited about those!
*Daddy went home and Peyton misses him a lot. But he'll be back today to see him!

This was written at 4:00AM this morning...
*Peyton woke up around 3AM and he was really thirsty. He asked for his Gatorade so I gave it to him. He started chugging it and I thought, he's gonna throw up. So, I made him stop drinking it and gave him a little bit of water instead. He was satisfied and laid back down. About 15 minutes later, he was up and asking for another drink. I handed him his Gatorade and he drank a little bit and then started throwing up. So, we paged his nurse and got his bedding switched out. We decided since he was awake that we would do his vitals, his blood work, give more pain meds, and flush his chest tubes. Well, Peyton wasn't too thrilled about it but I didn't want him to fall asleep and have somebody coming in in 30 minutes to do something else and wake us back up. So we gave him his Ibuprofen and then he threw up a little bit more. This time I was prepared with the bucket so we didn't have to change sheets again. But luckily, Peyton didn't throw up the Ibuprofen. Then we got Phlobotemy here to draw his blood and they poked him once and nothing came. So, we did a finger prick instead. We needed to give Peyton his Lasix through his IV and he only has the foot one now. (The IV in his hand came out about midnight and they hopefully will not redo it.) Well, when we put things through his IV, he says it burns so we have to have a heat pack. So Peyton is just crying cause everything hurts. Then the nurse flushed his chest tubes. It doesn't necessarily hurt but Peyton continued to cry since we were still bugging him. Then the Phlobotemist came back in cause she misplaced the blood that we just took. They turned on the light and checked the trash but couldn't find it. The nurse said that he would let me know what the outcome of that is. But for right now, they will NOT poke Peyton again...I won't let them. They can wait until later to get the labs done and at that point, I think we will have IV Team come and do it. So, for now, Peyton is asleep again and I am gonna try to fall back asleep. Hopefully we both can get a good nap this afternoon!*

This morning we went down for a chest x-ray around 6:30AM. Peyton did okay. He cried during it cause I think he was afraid that it would hurt. We gave him loritab around 7:45AM and then he threw up. But, again, we don't think he threw up the loritab. He wanted to order breakfast so he got red grapes, milk, and Froot Loops. He won't touch the Froot Loops but he's eating the grapes pretty well and he's enjoying his milk. He's watching Super Why and just relaxing.

We are still waiting for the doctors to do their rounds this morning but the nurse practitioner did come around earlier to talk about pulling the chest tubes. The plan is to pull them after they do their rounds. We will give Peyton some morphine before they pull them to take an edge off the pain.

Because he will be getting morphine through an IV, we attempted to flush his IV in his foot. The nurse realized that the IV was coming out and the water used to flush it was running all over the bed. So, we called the IV Team and they came and put a new IV in his hand. And then we pulled the IV out of his foot. Now Peyton can walk around without worrying about the IV. And I think the one in his hand is more comfortable than the one in his foot.

So, we have had quite an eventful morning and it's not even 9:00AM. I will hopefully get to take a shower in a little bit but I want to be here when the doctors come through.

Mason and Tanner are on their way to see Peyton and I'm really excited to see my other boys. Daddy is also on his way back up. Hopefully we can have some good Mommy/Daddy time.

Oh yuck! Why the vomiting? I know Grant always has electrolyte problems after surgery, so I hope that they can get that figured out soon! I imagine it has to hurt a lot to vomit right now! Thanks for the update and hang in there!

Owen's vomitting if finally ceasing at 4 weeks post op. It has been just awful! I pray that Peyton will feel better SO much sooner than that.

I am so sorry that your morning has been so chaotic. I am so sad that he had to get poked so much. Poor Guy. On a brighter note.. HORRAY for losing the chest tubes. That is HUGE!

I'm so glad to hear that everything is going well. All except the puking. Poor little guy! My kids made pictures for him, so I will try to get them out in the mail tomorrow. Mel, I'm so glad that you are writing all this down. It is so great to read and you'll love it when he gets older and you forget details. Give hima hug for us. We love you, Peyters!
